Worth seeing lighthouse high above the cliffs. Magnificent view over the coast. A staircase leads down to a climbing area. - No possibility to swim.

The lighthouse, which is still in use, is an octagonal tower with a range of 18 nautical miles. The history of the building dates back to 1537, when it was built on this site by the hermits. Farol da Guia remains a major tourist attraction and a must-see in Cascais.

Cabo da Guia's location at the mouth of the Tagus River has made it an important location for shipping. For these reasons, a lighthouse was built here to mark the way for ships. The first lighthouse was damaged in the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Rebuilding the facility required extensive remodeling and equipment replacement.

To illuminate the waterfront, the Marquis de Pombal commissioned the construction of six lighthouses and the renovation of the Farol da Guia. The reconstruction was completed in 1761. In 1957 the lighthouse was modernized and electrified, no longer requiring direct maintenance 🛥...
