The Hörnbrücke is a three-part folding bridge (three-span folding bridge) for pedestrians over the Hörn in the harbor of Kiel, which is the only bridge in the world that works according to this principle (three-span folding principle).
The Hörnbrücke is scheduled to be opened to shipping traffic around twelve times a day for a quarter of an hour each time and additionally if necessary.
The delicate bridge is considered a tourist attraction in Kiel because of its unusual construction and its exposed location.
The Hörnbrücke is also the starting or ending point of a tourist holiday route opened in May 2004, the German Ferry Route from Bremervörde to the Kiel Fjord.
Because of the technical problems that were initially common, the Hörn Bridge was often derisively called the “Nothing Works Bridge”. However, these deficiencies have been eliminated and it now “works” without any problems, only for the above-mentioned. It must be temporarily shut down for maintenance work. The push bridge is then used as an alternative so that the connection from the west to the east bank is ensured at all times.
