Wooden figure by Thomas Schwarz, which represents a Sorbian legend and tradition of a Sorbian custom.
The custom: The bescherkind is a girl who is dressed in Sorbian costume and wears an elaborate headdress and white gloves. His face is completely veiled with tulle so that it cannot be seen. In one hand it carries a rod of sticks, mostly made of birch branches, decorated with colorful ribbons, in the other a bag with sweets and fruit.[4]
On Christmas Eve, in some places even during the Advent season, the recipient goes from house to house with two companions, also dressed in traditional costume. The arrival is announced by a bell. The gift giver touches the left shoulder of adults with the rod to bring them good luck and health. Children stroke it over their cheeks, they also receive small gifts from the bag. In order not to be recognized, the recipient child remains silent throughout the visit.
