A very nice place in Essling is the sky at the feudal settlement.
The former gravel pit (at the end of the 1930s gravel was needed for the runways of the neighboring Aspern Airport) had turbulent years in the last few decades: Until 1970, building rubble and household waste was dumped unsecured in or near the Himmelteich pond. For about 20 years, the site languished - an ideal playground, adventure and fishing spot for the then young Esslingers, but a catastrophic environmental sin.
It was not until 1991 that the sky pond was cleared and rehabilitated (almost 160,000 m3 of contaminated sites were disposed of) and as a result the existing pond was transformed into a (larger) and quite wild biotope, which can be crossed via a bridge and its edges too (although also sometimes difficult) are accessible.
There are also a few meadows and benches in the vicinity of the Himmelteich - nothing stands in the way of a rest or a picnic.
