Mentioned as early as 936 in a document by Emperor Otto I, Calbe received market rights in 1160 and developed into an important trading center. In 1332 the city received a Roland. Today Calbe owns the only Roland with a helmet in Germany.
The town church of St. Stephani is a mighty late Gothic hall church and was built in the second half of the 15th century. Its two towers are 57 m high. The 29 m long and 18 m wide nave is structured on the outside by multiple stepped buttresses with battens and idiosyncratic gargoyles. The impressive construction was completed around 1480. The central building was built in 1602, the bridge between the towers with a roof turret, existing old bells were installed.
During the restoration in 1866, the baroque furnishings were removed. The sandstone pulpit and baptismal font created in the mid-16th century have been preserved to this day.
