    The Schiffbrückenplatz was originally a landing stage for ships. Due to the construction of the Kiel Canal, the water level dropped so much that the rivers in the city area dried up. So they were used as streets and squares.

    Today, the square invites you to go shopping and to linger on benches at its edge. A signpost shows the directions and distances to Rendsburg's twin towns. - Weekly market Wed+Sat: 7am-1pm

      The Schiffbrückenplatz was Rendsburg's port until 1893. The fountain is a reminder of this.

      Today it is hard to imagine that the Schiffbrückenplatz used to be a shipping pier within the Rendsburg fortress walls. Its name is reminiscent of the medieval founding of Rendsburg's old town around 1100 on three Eider islands. Due to the filling in of the Schleuskuhlen and above all in the course of the demolition of the Rendsburg fortifications in the 19th century, during which the material from the ramparts was poured into the old moats, Rendsburg increasingly silted up. Due to the construction of the Eider Canal and the Kiel Canal, the water level fell by more than two meters and all watercourses in the old town dried up. Today only the town lake reminds of the former island location of Rendsburg.

        Again, the name gives a clue to its history. A ship bridge is a landing place for ships, i.e. a port. Unfortunately, this harbor had to be filled up and used as a place because the water level had dropped by more than two meters due to the construction of the Kiel Canal. As a result, all inner-city watercourses dried up and were used for other purposes, i.e. as streets and squares.

        Only one ship can be found here. In the watercourse of Bonifazius Stirnberg's fountain, a stylized tjalk shows which types of ship were at home on the Eider. Children like to play here and make the square lively even on market-free days.

        The square invites you to go shopping and to linger on benches at its edge. A very important signpost shows the directions and distances to our sister cities.

        The weekly market takes place twice a week on Schiffbrückenplatz, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
