The "Lauseberg" measuring point was selected by Gaus because the site, which was tree-free at the time - after intensive wood use by the Wollbrandshausen community - had a clear view of the other triangular measuring points.

On the Lauseberg is one of the few well-preserved Gaussian survey stones. This commemorates the re-measurement of the Hanoverian part of the former electoral Mainz Untereichsfeld, which was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hanover at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In 1820 Gauss was commissioned to carry out the triangulation. The metrological work was carried out in 1828 by the royal hann. Artillery Captain G. W. Müller performed.

The Gaussian measuring stone is reminiscent of the "Lauseberg Pfahl" measuring point. The memorial stone was not erected by Gauss or the staff, but only in the 1860s. However, this is about 345m away from the original triangular point "Lauseberg Pfahl". Today this memorial stone is a cultural monument in the district of Göttingen. (Source: Prof. W. Denninger)
