Today's orangery was built by Gottfried von Gedeler in 1704-06 and used as a bitter orange house until 1755. In 1818 this building also became the property of the university. The outside baroque facade shows the rococo influence and sandstone sculptures by Elias Räntz. In the middle wing there is a water room with significant stucco furnishings. There used to be fountains that spewed water out of the marble floor. Today the splendid hall is among other things used for weddings. The orangery can only be viewed from the outside.

In 1703, Christian Ernst gave his wife Erlangen Castle, which had just been completed. The orangery was built a little later, between 1704 and 1706, on behalf of the margravine as part of the Erlangen palace complex. Due to the "teatro" shape, which is expressed in the oval floor plan, its arrangement in the entire palace ensemble and its dual function as a greenhouse and "maison de plaisir", it represents an important architectural and historical monument.
