On the divorce J.A. van der Goeskade / Kleine Kade, the Sint Maartenpoort, also called the Donkere Poort, was located until 1853. On the other side of the bridge was the East Gate (see tiles in the sidewalks). From here you have a beautiful view of the city harbor, which was dug around 1200. Looking at the other side you can see the course of the creek on which Goes was founded as a settlement. From the 15th to the 17th century, approximately one hundred salt chains and five madder ovens stood on either side of this harbor entrance.
For your information: a salt shed is a workshop equipped with a cooking device for evaporating a concentrated salt solution and allowing the salt to crystallize, as a production and refining technique. Salt was (and still is) an essential product for preserving and transporting fish.
What is madder? Madder was previously used as a raw material for the red dyes alizarin and purpurin. In addition, madder is also attributed a medicinal effect.
