This Schwalmstadt Bridge, inaugurated on August 9, 2014, is a symbol of the friendship between the municipality of Zwalm and its German sister municipality of Schwalmstadt, which has been maintained since 1973.

Schwalmstadt, the sister municipality of Zwalm, is located in the German state of Hessen and has approximately 18,000 inhabitants. As the name suggests, the town is named after the Schwalm, a tributary of the Eder.
The bridge inaugurated on the occasion of the 40-year (at the time of writing now 50-year) twinning between the two "Zwalm" municipalities was produced by metal company Buyck from Eeklo.
