The market square in Kelberg is a place of historical importance, because in 1795 Kelberg was named a market village. This had a legal meaning at the time, because it gave the place the right to hold markets and was considered a step towards elevation to the city. At that time Kelberg had an elevated position.

Before 1795 Kelberg was a market village. When Kelberg received market rights is not known. The term market place had a legal meaning and referred to the right granted by the sovereigns to hold markets. Larger market communities were also referred to as "market spots". Market rights can be seen as a kind of preliminary stage of city rights. It was a first important step to become a city.

Since market law has been regulated differently since 1795, with the exception of Bavaria, the term “market” no longer has any particular legal and content meaning. The market places had a central market place in the town. This is the case in Kelberg and therefore Kelberg has had a high position in the past.

Today's marketplace is a central information point for tourism and local recreation with signs about the historic street, the Eifelsteig and other hiking and cycling routes as well as other tourist information in Kelberger Land.
