When Offenbach opened the new slaughterhouse in 1904, it was designed for 100,000 residents. At that time, only 60,000 people lived in the city. The large complex with slaughterhouses, engine house, water tower, cold stores, ice factory, administration and residential buildings designed by the architect Röpert was built for the future. He designed functionally simple buildings in the tradition of late historicism with multicolored exposed brick facades and simple stone structures. Ornamental building decorations can only be found in the entrance area. Slaughter cattle, coal and other goods were delivered via a branch of the industrial railway. Before the war, the water tower, which can be seen from afar, had a high, curved spire. The Offenbach slaughterhouse was considered the most modern in Europe and was also noted and visited by groups of experts from abroad.
