The Tauentzienstein was built in honor of General Tauentzien and is intended to commemorate the heroic struggle of a division of the Prussian Landwehr, which withstood an overpowering French force until they - supported by Russian soldiers - could finally push back the French. During this critical situation, Tauentzien shouted to his soldiers the following words, immortalized on the memorial stone: "I will rather remain in the square with my entire corps before I take a step."
In 1897, the stone was first set up in a wooded area north of Dennewitz. However, the monument was hard to find and eventually fell off the pedestal. In 1988 the monument was brought to Dennewitz and placed between the museum and the church. After extensive restoration work, the coat of arms with the name Tauentziens is visible on the stone today.
