In 1659, the striking boundary stone number 1, the triangular three-country stone, consisting of Bentheim sandstone, was placed - exactly where North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and the border with the Netherlands meet. The stone contains the coats of arms of the county of Bentheim, the province of Overijssel and of Bishop Christoph Bernard von Galen, the bishop of Münster, who had the stone erected at that time. The letter H of Hanover was carved in the stone in 1824. The stone also symbolizes the merging of the regions and the people living in this region.
