Frans Naerebout, pilot and life saver. In 1779, he rescued 86 shipwrecked sailors from the stranded East India Company ship “Woestduyn” during heavy weather. The statue was made by F. ten Klooster and unveiled on July 5, 1952. Relocation in 2007 on Boulevard de Ruyter on the Western Scheldt

Frans Naerebout is one of the greatest naval heroes Vlissingen has ever produced. He was a pilot and saved people's lives. On Boulevard de Ruyter in Vlissingen, where you have a beautiful view of the pilot boats coming and going, there is a statue of him in action, ready to throw a rope to someone.
From fisherman to pilot and life saver
Frans Naerebout had simple origins. He started his working life in the industry his father also worked in: fishing. But over the years he worked his way up to become a pilot. And that is how he also became nationally famous: by saving sailors on the Western Scheldt.
Wild dune
It was July 27, 1779. The heavily loaded East Indiaman Woestduin was almost back in its home port of Middelburg after a long voyage from Batavia. Then they walked on a sandbank in the Western Scheldt. There was a heavy storm and the ship was constantly swamped by high waves. That evening it was a fair in Vlissingen, but you did not often see such a spectacle and the population came out to look at the ship in distress. The crew seemed hopelessly lost. Yet Frans Naerebout, together with his brother Jacob and seven others, took the plunge. After a few failed attempts, their small ship managed to rescue 71 of the 129 crew members. The next morning he saved another 16, bringing the total to 87.
