The gate was moved to its current location at the end of Pauluspromenade in 1771 at the request of Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra. It originally stood between the City Palace and the Main Guard. The gate was named after the Apostle Paul. A statue of Paul is located in the center above the portal.

The Paulustor in Fulda was built in the years 1709 to 1711 like many other buildings in Fulda in baroque style according to the plans of Johann Dientzenhofer. The gate was initially between the city palace and the main guard and was moved to its current location at the end of the Pauluspormenade in 1771 at the request of Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra, in order to better integrate the cathedral, which is located just outside the city center, into the cityscape.

The most beautiful entrance to the historic city center of Fulda is through the baroque Paulustor, built in 1710/11. The wide Pauluspromenade leads from the gate between the orangery with the palace park and the Fulda Cathedral to Bonifatiusplatz with the city palace and the surrounding baroque palaces.
It is interesting to note that the gate has only been in this place since 1771. Before that, the gate stood directly in front of the palace, separating the monastery district from the administrative and civic town.

The baroque gate was named after the apostle Paul, whose statue stands in the middle above the portal. He is flanked by the two city saints, Simplizius and Faustinus. Both sandstone statues were probably created by the sculptor Andreas Balthasar Weber. They served as guardian figures to protect the city from enemies and symbolized the defense of the faith.

Great view of the cathedral. We also "sat in the middle of the street" and drank wine here after Bonifatius' open air. What an experience in 2018. We want to repeat that in 2024 for the anniversary.
