Before opencast mining changed the landscape and the roads, the most famous federal highway in Germany, the B1, led from Aachen via Titz up past Alt-Elfgen, through Grevenbroich, further through the "death curve" (a hairpin bend with many fatalities) over the Country road through Hemmen and from there straight - similar to today's A46 - to the service area Vierwinden, an inn on the B1, further via Düsseldorf and further and further to the east of Germany. Between Titz and Fürth there was only one interruption through the town of Garzweiler, otherwise the B1 ran dead straight to Fürth. In Fürth there was a sharp bend after this "race track" with many accidents, today the Marienkapelle is there.
