The victory tower is a round tower built of sandstone on the 463 m above sea level. NHN high peak Hohe Wart in the Hohe Warte mountain range. Located in the city of Bayreuth, the viewing tower is 17 meters high, and a spiral staircase with 97 steps leads to the platform. It was built to commemorate the victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.
The laying of the foundation stone on the summit then known as "Auf dem spitz Stein" took place in pouring rain on May 6, 1874, when all of Germany was in a patriotic state. About four months later, on September 2, 1874, the tower was officially opened. The residents of Bayreuth and its surroundings had raised the cost of 1,200 marks. During the celebrations, attended by numerous associations, the tower was consecrated and a commemorative plaque was unveiled. Among other things, it contains the names of 28 soldiers from the region who lost their lives during the war.
In 1953, the Bayerische Elektricitäts-lieferungs-Gesellschaft AG (BELG), founded in Bayreuth in 1914, used the tower for tests on the reception of television signals. More recently, a barrier was installed at the top of the tower to discourage suicide attempts.
At the beginning of December 2021, the tower was closed for safety reasons, as parts of the sandstone in the crown area threatened to fall. For the renovation, which is planned until April 2022, the upper ring consisting of three rows of sandstone is to be completely removed temporarily. In mid-February 2022, it was announced that a tender was being prepared and costs of EUR 150,000 were expected.
