The "Süpürgeci Adam" (literally: "Street Sweeper Man") statue in Edirne stands in Tahmis Square and pays tribute to an important traditional craft of the city: broommaking.
The people of Edirne have traditionally been known for their broommaking skills, a craft passed down through generations. These brooms weren't just for cleaning; a special variety, the "aynalı süpürge" (brooms with a mirror), played an important role in local wedding traditions. According to tradition, a decorated broom with a mirror was hung in front of a house to indicate that a girl of marriageable age lived there.
