Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, is one of the most emblematic squares in Lisbon, Portugal. Located on the banks of the Tagus River, its history dates back to the 1755 earthquake that destroyed the area and the former Royal Palace that stood there.
History and Reconstruction
After the destruction, the Marquis of Pombal led the reconstruction of the city, and the square was redesigned with a monumental and symmetrical plan. The project, which became a symbol of Lisbon's reconstruction, included the installation of the equestrian statue of King José I in the center and a triumphal arch at the north entrance, which provides access to Rua Augusta.
Architectural Features
The square is bordered by arcaded buildings that house ministries and other government institutions. Its impressive size and its opening to the river give it a grand character.
