The Malente River was renaturalized over several years.
The area was restored to its state in 1790.
Meadow meadows and lakes were reinstated, the water level was raised by installing oak piles, trees and shrubs were planted, watercourses were cleared of culverts, and ponds for amphibians were created. Today, the approximately 100-hectare area is home to, among other species, white-tailed eagles, cranes, ducks, kingfishers, swans, cormorants, and geese.

The Malenter Au flows into the Kellersee and thus into the Schwentine. If you want to explore the course of the small river even further, you can also take a look at the “Wunderwelt Wasser” park. Part of the circular route leads over footbridges over the partly rewetted, reclaimed areas directly on the Malenter Au. A footbridge also leads a short distance over the river.
