    You have to earn the view and the departure from Scheltenpass! From Mervelier, the road rises 13km to the pass steadily with z.T. steep ramps. In the first part to Schelten one is often still in the shadow of the forest and it accompanies a rippling of the racheting in the gorge. The upper part is then relentless in the sun and if then tropical temperatures of 34'C to come as in my tour, you are dried up like a pomme chips. But then you will be rewarded with a fast descent to Balsthal. Attention, there are always sections with rockfall, i. Stones on the road, and road sections with coarse holes in the pavement.

            The Scheltenpass is an absolute recommendation. From the east, the route climbs through the idyllic Guldental times flat times crunchy (max 12%) over meadows and through woodland to swing up at the head of the valley with a few switchbacks over a meadow slope to the pass. The west side leads in sections through the gorge-like narrow valley of Scheltenbach, where again and again impressive limestone rock walls rise into the sky, here the slope remains a bit more moderate than on the east side. The road conditions are good (08/2019) and so both directions are also ideal for a fun high-speed descent.
