Saint Amand's Church

A church dedicated to Saint Amandus had existed here for a long time, which probably belonged to the parish of Gors-Opleeuw. This church was mentioned in 1246.

In 1835 the parish of Zammelen became independent. From 1865-1872, after the old church was declared dilapidated, a new church was built. Architect was Herman Jaminé.

It is a brick single-aisled aisleless church in an eclectic style with mainly neo-Romanesque elements. The tower is half built and has four sections

The church of Sint-Amandus was probably a branch of that of Gorsleeuw. Originally, the chapter of Tongeren owned a quarter of the patronage rights over the church. In 1246 this was transferred to the chapter of Borgloon. One third of the tithes went to the pastor of Zammelen, two thirds to the dean of the chapter of Tongeren. The Zammelen parish became independent in 1835.
