In a deed of foundation from the year 1170, the lords of Dihespecke were mentioned as witnesses to new empires of the Zell monastery. This is also the first documented mention of the place, which at that time was owned by the lords of Truhendingen and who later handed the village over to the Nuremberg burgraves.[5] The place name, which is often distorted in old documents (e.g. as "Dyepeck" or as "Diesteck")[6] is derived from a field name of the same name, the root word of which is the Middle High German word "specke" (= Specke: Knüppelweg or Knüppeldamm over wet terrain[6]) and whose modifier is possibly the adjective "dîche" (= thick).[7][8]
For 1486 the noble families of the Stiebar (also in 1541, 1574 and 1617) and the Schenkenstein taverns in Diespeck are documented.[9] There was also a knightly castle in Diespeck, but it was burned down during the margrave wars (as early as 1449) and peasant wars (around 1525, when the village served as a residence for the Durlach family) and was not rebuilt. During the 1448 fires set by Nuremberg during the feuds of Albrecht Achilles, an early mass chapel on the western outskirts of the town was destroyed down to its foundations. The parish baptismal font comes from the oldest church in Diespeck from the 13th century, which was destroyed in the conflicts of the 15th century 1465 were installed in the walls. In 1490 the parish was taken care of by the Franciscans in Riedfeld. The church was surrounded by a late medieval fortification with defensive towers at the four corners. The cemetery, which was also heavily fortified with the church, still showed a wall and two towers and a gate secured by a tower even after the wars and destruction of the 14th to 17th centuries[10].[11]
