From the 50.5 m high observation tower you have a wonderful panoramic view of Varel and the surrounding area, over the Jade Bay to Wilhelmshaven and Tossens.
The tower was built in clinker brick construction in 1913/1914 and is still used today to supply the city of Varel with drinking water.
In a flyer you can find out that in 1914 the tower supplied over 21 km of pipelines to around 350 house connections with 5600 residents. Delivery rate: 77,345 cbm / year -
100 years later there were 64 km of pipelines, 3,650 house connections, 10,545 inhabitants and a flow rate of 680,000 cbm / year. -
Non-residents may wonder why there are only a good 10,000 inhabitants, Varel has around 24,500 inhabitants.
Today's city of Varel consisted of two independent communities until June 30, 1972
Varel-Land and Varel-Stadt.
The city got its water via the Varel waterworks, i.e. via the water tower.
The rural community obtained its water from the Oldenburg-Ostfriesischen-Wasserverband (OOWV). Both communities had separate pipe networks. -
To secure the supply, the technical prerequisites were only created in 2020, after 106 years, and a transfer point was set up. This can be used to transfer the water from one network to the other.
