In the 13th century, a Cistercian monastery was founded in the remote valley of the Burbacher Bach, which gradually fell into disrepair after it was dissolved for secularization in 1802. In the course of the mining of lignite, the opencast mines have eaten their way up to the former monastery area. Nevertheless, the landscape and nature around the monastery are still very original and differ significantly from the recultivated opencast mines. Therefore, the drive through the area leaves a very special impression. But caution is advised as there are numerous people out there walking the narrow street.
