    Beltringharder Koog

    "The area serves the long-term preservation and undisturbed development of a former Wadden Sea area with large areas of salt and fresh water habitats, tidal floodplains, swamps and other wetlands as well as a characteristic flora and fauna associated with these habitats, in particular the protection of the mud flats that rest and breed here and waterfowl".

      The dike in the Nordstrander Bay was not completed until 1987, the Beltringharder Koog was built and Nordstrand is in fact connected to the mainland. The crossing over the dam is absolutely worthwhile. In some places you can switch from the Wadden Sea side to the inland side or vice versa. At the time of bird migration, this area must be a wonderful place for bird watching.

          The Beltringharder Koog is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein at around 3,400 hectares. The Koog was created in the 1980s by extensive diking measures between the northern tip of the island of Nordstrand and the southern tip of the Sönke-Nissen-Koog. The protests at the time, especially by environmentalists, against the gigantic dyke construction measures could not prevent the dyke from being closed, but ultimately achieved that the entire area of the Koog was placed under nature protection as a biotope in 1991.

                  The Beltringharder Koog nature reserve is the largest nature reserve on the mainland of Schleswig-Holstein and covers 3,350 hectares. It is located near the Nordstrand Bay and was dammed in 1987 as part of a coastal protection project. Today it is an important bird paradise and one of the most bird-rich regions in Germany.

                  The Beltringharder Koog offers a diverse landscape of saltwater lagoons, wet meadows and wilderness areas. These different biotopes provide a habitat for numerous species of birds that rest and breed here. Over 100,000 waders and water birds use the area throughout the year.

                  The area is divided into different zones, each of which has specific functions and protection measures. These include the reservoir at the Sönke-Nissen-Koog Siel, the Lüttmoorsee, a tidal-influenced saltwater lagoon and the Holmer See. These areas are important refuges for many plant and animal species and contribute significantly to the ecological balance of the region.

                  There are numerous ways for visitors to explore the Beltringharder Koog. There are designated walking trails and bird watching huts that offer a good view of the impressive bird life and the various habitats. In addition, the Integrated Station West Coast offers an exhibition that offers exciting insights into nature conservation and the coastal habitats of the Koog.
