The Laufenburg was built in the 12th century by the Dukes of Limburg. Since the 17th century it has only existed as a ruin. In 1895 the battlements of the round corner towers were renewed.

The current restaurant is closed on Mondays.

The Laufenburg is a hilltop castle near Langerwehe in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on a hill 217 meters above sea level surrounded by the Sührbach in the Prym family's private forest between the Langerweh districts of Heistern and Merode. To the east of it are the Erbswald and the Meroder Forest, formerly part of the county of Merode. It can be reached by car from the Heistern side.

The castle was founded in the 12th century by the Limburgs as a knight's castle to secure their territory. The castle included the village of Wehe, later called Langerwehe, as well as arable land, meadows and forest. In 1359 the area fell to Jülich and the castle lost its military importance. Since the 13th century the castle had been owned by the Lords of Louvenberg. By the middle of the 15th century at the latest the Reuschenberg family had inherited the fortress. In the following period the noble owners changed until the last mistress married the soap manufacturer Eduard Rossbach in 1854. In 1881 the castle was sold to the Hoesch industrialist family from Düren, and in 1913 to the Stolberg manufacturer Prym.

After the destruction caused by the Second World War, reconstruction began in 1950. Restoration and modernization followed in 1963. In 1985 the castle was rebuilt and renovated. The 38×24 meter castle complex made of quarry stone masonry is owned by the Prym family and is leased as a farm and restaurant.
