The Ouspensky Monastery, also known as the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Monastery, is located in the southern part of the Crimean Peninsula, halfway between Simferopol and Sevastopol. The temple is situated in a carved out of a rocky slope in the Crimean Mountains and is now one of the biggest tourist attractions of Crimea. The first works on the construction of the monastery were carried out in the 8th century by Greek Christian monks fleeing Byzantium from the persecution of the iconodula. In the second half of the 18th century, after Russia took over the Crimea, the Greek monks were forced to leave the monastery, which was soon transformed into an Orthodox temple. In 1818 the monastery was visited by Tsar Alexander I. During the Bolshevik revolution, the monastery was plundered and during the Second World War it was used as a field hospital. The monks did not return here until the end of the 20th century. Currently, there is a male monastery here and only part of the complex is open to the public.
