In Paris Ferrer developed his first ideas for "modern schools", building on the traditions of free education, radicalized by anarchist-socialist ideals. According to Ferrer, the existing school system was an instrument of the ruling class, aimed at servitude. He believed in a system based on spontaneity, aimed at self-development, spiritual independence and complete emancipation of the individual. Ultimately, in his view, this could even lead to a complete change of society, in a libertarian-anarchist direction.

In 1906, however, Ferrer suffered a major setback: an office clerk from the publishing house of his foundation was found to be involved in an attack on Alfons XIII of Spain and Catholic newspapers were only too happy to take advantage of this by stating that the attack was the result. of the secular and socialist-anarchist education that Ferrer advocated. Ferrer was arrested and imprisoned. All his schools were closed. Thanks to an international campaign (supported by famous names such as Anatole France, Georges Lorand [2] and Ernst Haeckel) he was released after 13 months and he was allowed to reopen his schools.

However, when anarchist revolts broke out in Barcelona (the "Tragic Week") in 1909, Ferrer was arrested again on vague charges of involvement. In reality, Ferrer was in England during Tragic Week.[3] Without being given the opportunity to defend himself and without any real evidence[4], he was sentenced to death by a military tribunal along with four others. His death sentence provoked widespread outrage and protest internationally. It was hoped for some time that Alfons XIII would not sign the death warrant, but he eventually did. After his conviction, Ferrer was taken to a cell set up like a chapel. On October 13, 1909, he was executed in Montjuïc Castle. He didn't want to be blindfolded. His last words were: "I am innocent. Long live the Modern School".

Its a great sculpture of a great man, never giving up and believing in his ideas until death.
