The Vigna delle Sanzioni is a monumental historic vineyard from the early twentieth century. It is an agricultural work located in my municipality, in Loro Ciuffenna (Ar), located along the ancient road of Etruscan-Roman origin Setteponti.
Overlooked by the Pieve di Gropina, its nickname "Sanctions" derives from the economic measures imposed by the League of Nations on the Kingdom of Italy starting from 18 November 1935 in response to Mussolini's attack against the Empire of Ethiopia. The issue became thorny, but, after months of international pressure, on 4 July 1936 the sanctions were lifted, the League of Nations discredited, and fascist Italy rejoiced. To remember all this, the vineyard was commissioned by the Italian government in 1936 as a manifesto of national greatness and reform.
More than 100 workers were employed in its construction: men, women and children worked every day for two years, using the mere strength of their arms, simple iron tools, boxes of dynamite, a few mules and some Chianina cows. ; a great collective undertaking of the post-war period to transform a mountain into a living sculpture.
