The plane tree was planted around 150 years ago along the banks of the Grote Nete (and the branches hang over it nicely for photo enthusiasts) as a 'corner tree' to demarcate the ownership situation of the Hof Ter Laken castle domain, as the information board for it explains (see photo). It can also be seen in the 1975 movie Pallieter and the foot was apparently also a hiding place for soldiers in WW2. But you can also read that on the information board.

"Northwest of the Hof Ter Laken castle, a plane tree (Platanus x hispanica) has been planted along the banks of the Grote Nete as a corner tree to mark the ownership situation of the castle domain. The plane tree has already developed into an imposing solitary tree and has been seen for its location along the Grote Nete is very iconic: the total height is approximately 36 meters; the crown diameter approaches 30 meters; the trunk circumference is 384 cm and the tree has a high leaning trunk of 6 meters (measured in 2006)."
