In 1896, the mechanical engineering manufacturer Johann Hampel decreed in his will that his fortune of around 750,000 marks should be used to build a church within 5 years. In order to meet the deadline, the foundation stone was first laid in 1901. Construction then began in July 1908.
During World War II the church burned down and large parts of the church building collapsed.

The Zion Church – also called the Zion Church Ruins or
old Zion Church – is a church ruin in the Südvorstadt district used by the city of Dresden as a lapidary.

It was possible to convert a war-destroyed building to house the fragments that the war had left behind from old Dresden.

All temporary lapidary buildings have now been dismantled, and the finds have been stored, archived, and scientifically recorded in the Zion Church. Monuments from more recent times are also kept here or temporarily stored until reuse.
