The visit is really worthwhile. It does not require any special equipment except sunscreen, sunglasses and lots of water.
(As of 05/2018) - The journey from Palenque is easily possible by car, colectivo or bike, of course it is also on foot. The entrance fee is divided into two parts, 34 pesos are paid at the entrance to the park, another 70 pesos for the entrance to the ruins (per adult). The ruin is open from 08:00 to 17:00 o'clock, early appearance secures as always the best places (say, there is hardly anyone there and the sun is not burning quite so strongly). In the area of the parking lot you will find everything you need in terms of amenities (food, drinks, souvenirs, toilets), on the premises itself you will find at the entrance to the waterfall another toilet.

Suffice to say Palenque is a medium-sized Mayan site, smaller than Tikal, Chichen Itza, or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. The ruins of Palenque, nestled in the rainforest, are the archaeological highlight in Chiapas. The Mayan architects created fantastic temples, such as the "Templo de las Inscripciones" (Temple of the Inscriptions) with a burial chamber that is no longer accessible today. The palace is just as impressive with its many chambers, inner courtyards and corridors and the stone tower, which was unusual for the Maya.

Palenque, the sublime ruined city of the Maya culture, lies on a high plateau at the foot of a chain of hills, surrounded by tropical, evergreen rainforest. Dozens of buildings, pyramids and temples are scattered across the clearing and hidden deep in the Chiapas jungle. Of all the Mayan cities, Palenque is certainly one of the most beautiful and fascinating, a splendid testament to Mayan art. Palenque existed as early as 300 BC, but only experienced its heyday between 600 and 800 AD, as the religious and political center of the entire region.

The architecture of the temple city is characterized by a high degree of perfection. The mighty building structures have been repeatedly renewed and enlarged over the decades. The stonemasons of the Mayas created masterfully designed reliefs and highly elaborated sculptures.
