The Eindsdijk along the Handzamevaart is a quiet spot, with a picnic bench and a wide view of the surrounding trousers between Esen and Vladslo. It was different during the First World War. Then the Germans built a harbor here to ship concrete parts for bunkers and trenches, as well as provisions to the first lines on the Yser.

"The hamlet of Eindsdijk already played an important role in the Middle Ages
as a harbour. The still existing Portweg connected the Houtland higher up,
the noble lordships and the city of Torhout with the Handzavaart and IJzer.
This strategic location would come in handy again during the First World War.
The Germans reached the Yser in mid-October 1914. After a long siege they conquered Diksmuide on November 10, 1914, with the breakthrough coming from this Handzame valley. It is not surprising that General Baron Jacques is still looking in this direction on the Grote Markt in Diksmuide. The flooding of
the Yser Valley stopped the German advance. The Handzaamvallei was also flooded
to stand when the IJzervlakte floods."
