The artistically significant baroque fountain dates from 1708 and was built by Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt. It shows Hercules slaying the many-headed Cerberus. The four children's figures are intended to represent Hercules' youthful deeds.

As one of the most important trading towns on the pass road to Bohemia, the city of Zittau developed very quickly after it was founded in 1230. In addition to the large church buildings, the splendor of the city also included a large number of fountains, some of which have still been preserved. The Hercules Fountain is located north of the salt house and was commissioned in 1709 by the then mayor Christian von Hartig. The work, probably created by Michael Hoppenhaupt, consists of an octagonal, curved water basin with a side length of approx. 2.6 meters. From this rises the eight-meter-high sandstone fountain column, which is decorated with water-spewing lion heads and four children's figures at the corners, and which is crowned by the club-wielding figure of Hercules. Hercules fights to slay the three-headed hellhound Ceberus.
