Lith is known for the book Village aan de Rivierby Antoon Coolen (1934), which was made into a film in Lith by Fons Rademakers (see Village on the River). Also in 2006 the premiere of the musical work "Village aan de Rivier" took place. The piece was composed by Leon Vliex and was performed by the Lithse fanfare. In 2007 and 2008, the book "Village aan de Rivier" was re-enacted by various associations and individuals from the municipality of Lith and the surrounding area at a unique location near de Maas.

The oldest traces of habitation in this region date back to 700 BC. to 500 BC, corresponding to the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The objects were found when excavating the gravel holes of the Lithse Ham. Roman objects have also been found there.

Julius Caesar comes during the "Gallic War" in his battle against the "Belgae" from 57 to 51 BC. in present-day North Brabant, where he virtually exterminates the Germanic Usipeti en Tencteren, in the zone between Maren-Kessel and Lith . He writes about this in his Commentarii Rerum in Gallia Gestarum. The area then becomes part of Gallia Belgica, a Roman province.

Lith is mentioned for the first time in history in the year 991, when the French king Hugo Capet confirmed the property rights of the Saint Remigius Abbey in Reims on goods in, among others, Lithoijen.
