The old mining site ('Site Calaminaire') in Plombières (Blieberg) has since been transformed into a European protected nature reserve. This area is protected because of all kinds of rare plant species that occur on the mining waste there. More information about this park can be found here: paysdeherve.be/nl/mijnsite-van-plombieres

This old mining area is home to a nature reserve characterized by the presence of heavy metals or calamine grass. These are home to a very special fauna and flora related to the presence of zinc or other heavy metals in the soil. The municipality of Plombières - Bleyberg in German - was, like Kelmis, a mining municipality, with the difference that lead was extracted here. The former mining heaps are today, as in Kelmis, a nature reserve, only much more extensive. We recommend planning a visit of at least one hour here, especially since the place invites you to linger and rest.
Many representatives of the calamine flora grow here, plants that can cope with heavy metal soils, and are even dependent on them. Thrift, calamine violet, calamine twig are well represented here.
The Göhl flows through the area before disappearing impressively into an artificial tunnel. You had to turn them over to get the water flow in the pit under control.
