The parish church of Saint-Michel is a Romanesque church from the 12th century. It was fortified with moats, a curtain wall and towers that have now been leveled. Its facade has a small firing chamber at the top of each of its two corner buttresses.

Tradition has it that this is the site of the old castle of Ozillac, destroyed in 1652. In the Gothic period, the chapels increased the volume by doubling each arm of the transept on the eastern side. It is therefore on this date that the west facade of the church would then have been rebuilt as well as the defensive square turrets.

The building was hard hit by the Wars of Religion. Work campaigns from the 17th to the beginning of the 18th century followed.

Note that the square bell tower with a slate-covered roof only dates from the 19th century.

The interior has been modified and enlarged by adding Gothic chapels.

The church and its crypt-ossuary have been listed as historical monuments since December 5, 2000 and the 1785 painting representing the Calvary of Christ as a historical object since 1980.

In 2013, the municipality of Ozillac financially supported by the General Council of Charente-Maritime (30%), the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (20%) and by the Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes through the Regional Fund for Intervention locale (FRIL) is launching a renovation estimated at €400,000 in 5 installments as well as a public subscription. Donations are possible online (secure payment) on the website: poitou-charentes.fondation-patrimoine.org (“all projects” section). These donations are tax deductible up to 66%.

According to Françoise Doutreuwe, DPLG-ICH architect who supervises all the work, "this is not a church that has suffered major damage, even if concerns have arisen over the years. It must be said that there hasn't been any work for a long time. It's an interesting project on a building which has the particularity, in Saintonge, of not being Romanesque, even if the chevet is."
