The Romanesque church of Mespelare dates from the 12th century and was dedicated to Saint Aldegonde upon its foundation.
The church is the best-preserved and most interesting place of pilgrimage from the Romanesque period in our region. The monumental tower was decorated with statues of the four evangelists at the four corners near the bell chamber. Originally, the spire was Romanesque and made of natural stone. In 1745, after a lightning strike and fire, this spire was replaced by an apple- and pear-shaped spire.

Church from the end of the 12th (!!) century, which was later expanded, but already acquired its current size and shape in the early 15th century.
The original tower was severely damaged by a lightning strike in 1745. The new tower, which was completed in 1756, initially provoked quite a bit of derision. The whole thing was described as "an apple, a pear and an upside-down cup" and called the height of "bad taste".
Now the unusual shape of the spire attracts the walker's attention from afar.

From the looks of it, the inside of the church is also worth a visit, but I will have to visit it a second time. After all, at 6 p.m. the church was no longer accessible...
