At the time, the Danish court was not interested in a connection between Hamburg and Lübeck for reasons of customs policy and did not want to negotiate directly with the senates of the Hanseatic cities about the construction, but was open to granting a concession to a private consortium.
In 1841, therefore, a road construction association with members from Hamburg and Lübeck was founded, which successfully applied to the Danish king for the concession to build such a “private road”. In the course of the negotiations, the Danish side also pushed through the course of the route via Ahrensburg and Wandsbek, although the Hanseatic cities had preferred the shorter connection via Bramfeld to Barmbek. Construction work on the new route, which joins the Altona-Lübecker Chaussee near Elmenhorst, began on September 13, 1841; on May 20, 1843 the new route was opened.
