All that remains of the former castle are the remains of mortar and quarried limestone. According to legend, there was a secret passage in the rock between the castle and the "robber's cave" about 600 meters to the east. There was also a watchtower above the cave to control the Naab Valley. Renovated walls of up to one meter high still exist from the tower.

      Burgstall Löweneck

The first historical information about Löweneck Castle dates back to 1277. The Wittelsbachs are probably the builders of the castle, and the date of its construction is probably around the year shortly before the first mention of the castle lords. The dating of ceramic finds also roughly points to the year 1300.
The Löweneck family also does not appear in documents from the Pielenhofen monastery, founded in 1240, before 1278. The castle lords of Löweneck were ministerials of the Bavarian dukes, who were also the feudal lords of the castle. The castle's task could have been to control several traffic routes that ran from Penk through the "Penker Valley" to Pollenried and Nittendorf and past the castle to Etterzhausen and further to Regensburg. The castle lords also monitored a river crossing near Etterzhausen on behalf of the duke.
The Bavarian dukes Rudolf and Ludwig later issued a privilege to the Pielenhofen nunnery, allowing them to destroy the castle after the Löweneck family's death. Löweneck Castle was probably perceived as a threat by the nunnery.
In 1312, the castle, the village of Penk and other fiefs were sold by Eckard von Löweneck to Dietrich von Parsberg and the Lords of Taxöldern. The Parsbergers were unable to prevent the castle from being demolished, however, and in 1316 King Ludwig the Bavarian ordered that "the Löweneck fortress that he destroyed should no longer be built". Dietrich von Parsberg sold "the Löweneck castle stables with the village of Penk" and all its belongings to the Pielenhofen monastery.
The site of the ruined hilltop castle is at the tip of a mountain spur that extends to the west-northwest and which drops steeply into the valley of the Naab in the north, in places with vertical rock faces. In the east, a ditch had to be dug for protection. The area of this two-part spur castle is rectangular in shape with a length of around 45 metres and a width of around 15 metres and is divided into an outer castle and a main castle, which is located slightly higher up. The entire surface is very uneven, and the foundations of stone buildings are still below the surface. The only remains of the castle walls that are still visible today are at the very tip of the outer castle, where there was a square, probably tower-shaped building, of which the remains of a quarry stone wall with a niche are exposed.

Unfortunately, only small remnants of the castle remain, but the hike is still worthwhile.
