The area at Goldstein has served as an area for growing black thorn since 1781. The thorny branches of this shrub were used for grading, i.e. increasing the salt content. Due to the decline in salt production and the dismantling of the 23 former graduation buildings, the area finally lay fallow. When water consumption in the city increased due to the increasing number of spa guests, a new waterworks was built on the Goldstein hill in 1907. The work was fed from a fountain in the Vogelsberg. The mundane supply purpose of the waterworks was "elevated" by a defensive lookout tower in 1909. The park-like area surrounding it should invite spa guests to linger. As one of two parts of the area of the 4th Hessian State Garden Show 2010, the Goldstein was completely redesigned and replanted, so that today a charming public park surrounds the observation tower.
