East of Wortel lies the more than 540 hectare area Wortel-Kolonie. Once a colony for vagrants, today the place for dozens of species of birds, bats, insects and other inhabitants. Stately forest avenues, open fields, fens, heathland and grasslands alternate. Don't be fooled by the peace and quiet, Wortel-Kolonie is teeming with animal life. Since 1999, the area has been a cultural-historical heritage and since 2021 it has also been a UNESCO world heritage site. This unique wooded landscape is therefore home to a fascinating history. You can enjoy walking, cycling and horse riding there. You can also camp there; The bivouac zone has been open since 3 May 2014. Motorised traffic is not allowed.

You must reserve a spot online to be allowed to spend the night at a bivouac zone of Natuur en Bos. The reservation is free and easy.

Visit this silent witness to the vagrant past of Wortel-Colonie. The vagrants were given a number when they arrived in the Colony. Lead pictures hang on the white crosses of the tramp cemetery, which is why they often only bear a number, not a name.

Wortel-Kolonie is a special area with a unique story. The Colonies of Benevolence tell a remarkable piece of history from the time when our regions were part of the Netherlands, between 1815 and Belgian independence in 1830. The Dutch general Johannes van den Bosch started an idealistic social experiment to combat poverty, but at the same time also to get people on the fringes of society, such as vagrants or beggars, to fall into line.

In the summer of 2021, Wortel-Kolonie was added to the UNESCO list of world heritage. 25 years ago, the former vagrant colony was one of the 100 most endangered heritage sites in the world, and still few people have ever heard of it.
