The Iron Gate's inner gate was a special security mechanism in case the enemy had already entered through the mighty, outer gate. Then they threw stones or shot at him from above (from a bay window).

In the 15th century, Freinsheim fell to the Electoral Palatinate, which also belonged to the Kurrheinische Reichskreis, on whose behalf the existing fortifications were expanded. The last component of the city wall to be completed in 1514 was the iron gate, whose name comes from the Palatinate dialect expression for outer gate. During the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689, Freinsheim was badly damaged; only the foundation walls remained. Reconstruction took place in the early 18th century. Prominent administrative functions within the Electoral Palatinate, especially the establishment of a sub-office, promoted the economic boom.
