The design of the market is based on the 2001 competition results. The aim was to bring out the original character of the market square for Apolda's city center, but to interpret it in a modern way.
The historical structure with its 2-3-storey buildings and the striking town hall now again form the visible edges of the open space.

The rectangular market square of Apolda is an urban ensemble in the old town of Apolda. It existed as early as the 12th century and at that time was of central importance for the exchange of goods of the place and its surroundings. The current picture is characterized by the town hall and houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. These houses stand out by massive and stately execution in the building substance of the half-timbered houses in the former suburbs around the Martinskirche and the Lindenberg from (Wikipedia).

Apolda was first mentioned in 1119. Bell foundry and textile processing were significant. The bell foundry was founded in 1722 and produced until 1988. The largest bell cast here, weighing 24 tons, is in Cologne Cathedral.
