The St. Philip Martyrium stands on top of the hill outside the northeastern section of the city walls. It dates from the 5th century. It was said that Philip was buried in the center of the building and, though his tomb has recently been unearthed, the exact location has not yet been verified.[26] The Martyrium burned down at the end of the 5th or early 6th century, as attested by fire marks on the columns. Philip is said to have been martyred in Hierapolis by being crucified upside-down[27] or by being hung upside down by his ankles from a tree.

The Martyrium was built in the 5th century by the palace architects and it is a holy pilgrimage site for Christians. The ruins of the cathedral date back to the 6th century and contain the baptistery and the chapel of the metropolitan bishop. The 7th-century church known as the Church of the Pillars (Direkli Kilise) is the other significant structure from the Christian era. There are several other chapels scattered around the city. These structures prove that Hieropolis was an important religious center during the Eastern Roman Empire. That is why the archaeologists named it as the holy city.
