The church in Gärtringen received its current form between 1485 and 1500. The late Gothic nave was then attached to the church tower, which was completed in 1460. The axis of the entire building was shifted slightly to the south. The roof of the tower got its present form in the 17th century. The church sits on a raised, walled square that also served as a graveyard until 1731. Based on the overall layout and especially the type of tower, the Gärtringer church can be counted among the fortified churches to which the population withdrew with supplies when war threatened. Remains of the defensive wall are still there. The burial place of the Hiller von Gaertringen family, who have lived here since 1635, is still on the south side.

Gärtringen belonged to the Count Palatine of Tübingen until the late 14th century. In 1382, Count Eberhard von Württemberg acquired the village together with Herrenberg and numerous neighboring villages for the House of Württemberg, whose rule Gärtringen has been under since then. The church charter - the responsibility for appointing the pastor and building the church - also passed to Württemberg, which in 1455 gave these rights to a monastery (collegiate church!) newly founded in Herrenberg, but exercised them again directly after the Reformation. Since the 12th century there has been evidence of noblemen living in Gärtringen who called themselves 'von Gärtringen'. At the time the church was built, this was the Harder von Gärtringen family, whose tombs can be seen in the church, among others. Her coat of arms shows two sickles back to back. Tombstones and coats of arms of other noble families that temporarily resided in Gärtringen, such as the lords of Waldeck, are signs of their influence on village and church life.
