Limestone was quarried on the “Schmittshöhe”, the top layer of rock on the building site. The shell limestone was formed about 220 million years ago through the submarine deposition of limestone. At that time the area of today's Odenwald was covered by a sea.
The former quarry on the "Schmittshöhe" was founded in 1899 by the independent lime burner Franz Hauck
operated for exactly 30 years. Today the quarry is designated as a biotope.
