The Tasmanian Devil Unzoo is the first of its kind in the world: a zoo with no boundary walls or enclosures, allowing its animals to roam freely and come and go as they please.
Only the Tasmanian Devils are enclosed -- albeit in a massive forested habitat -- but that's in everyone's best interest: Tassie Devils have the most powerful bite relative to body size of any living mammalian carnivore, exerting a force of 553 N (56.4 kgf).
The Devils on the Tasman Peninsula are also free of the devastating Devil Facial Tumor Disease, a horrible cancer that has reduced the species’ population from 140,000 to around 20,000. There is no vaccine for the disease, which is spread through the Devil's saliva. While scientists continue to study the cancer, the Devils on Tasmania's mainland are kept separated from the Peninsula by a cattle grid on the Arthur Highway over the Denison Canal.
